    10 years ago - on October 3rd 1997 - the pkgsrc software management system
    was created by Alistair Crooks and Hubert Feyrer. pkgsrc, the
    <emphasis>NetBSD Packages Collection</emphasis>, was primary intended
    as packaging system for NetBSD. Today, pkgsrc is a cross-platform
    framework, running on the BSDs, Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, many Unix derivatives
    and even on Windows.

<title id="binarydist.title">Binary distribution</title>

<para>The binary packages that are produced by pkgsrc can be used
without having to compile everything from source. &os; already contains
the necessary tools for managing binary packages, on other platforms you
need to <firstterm>bootstrap</firstterm> pkgsrc to get the package
management tools installed.

<para>Binary packages are available on ftp.NetBSD.org and its
<ulink url="../../mirrors/#ftp">mirrors</ulink> in
the directory <ulink url="http://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/pkgsrc/packages/"
><filename>/pub/pkgsrc/packages/</filename></ulink> (see <ulink
url="../pkgsrc/ftp-layout.html">the pkgsrc guide</ulink> for more
details). If the tools for managing binary packages do not exist on a
platform or are too old, they are provided along the binary packages in
an archive called <filename>bootstrap.tar.gz</filename>, which must be
extracted in the <filename>/</filename> directory. Then you can run
<filename>/usr/pkg/sbin/pkg_add</filename> to install binary packages.

After downloading and/or extracting the sources, installing the bootstrap
kit should be as simple as:

This will use the defaults of <filename>/usr/pkg</filename> for the

the package database directory.  However, these can also be set using
command-line parameters (use <command>./bootstrap --help</command>
to see the available options).

Note that when using pkgsrc on a non-NetBSD system, use the
<command>bmake</command> command instead of <quote>make</quote> to run
NetBSD make, which is required for correct pkgsrc operation. Simply
substitute <quote>bmake</quote> for <quote>make</quote> in pkgsrc
documentation.
